I'm excited to share my latest YouTube video exploring the rich history of Hopton Castle, a medieval fortress nestled in the Shropshire countryside. This site stands as a testament to the turbulent times of the English Civil War and the enduring spirit of those who defended it.

📜 A Glimpse into History

Hopton Castle, located near Craven Arms in Shropshire, dates back to the 12th century. Originally established as a motte-and-bailey structure, it was later fortified in stone by Walter de Hopton during the Barons' War of the 1260s. The castle's most notable moment came in 1644 during the English Civil War. A small Parliamentary garrison, led by Samuel More, held the castle against a siege by Royalist forces under Sir Michael Woodhouse. Despite being vastly outnumbered, the defenders resisted for several weeks. Upon surrender, most of the garrison was executed—a grim episode known as the Hopton Castle Massacre.

🛠️ Restoration and Preservation

After centuries of decay, the Hopton Castle Preservation Trust acquired the site in 2008. Through dedicated efforts and substantial funding, including a significant grant from the National Lottery, the castle underwent extensive restoration. It reopened to the public in December 2011, allowing visitors to connect with this poignant piece of history.

🎥 Watch the Journey

In my video, I delve into the architectural features of Hopton Castle, recount the harrowing siege, and reflect on the site's significance today. Join me as we uncover the layers of history embedded in these ancient stones.
